Working on UFO's

I've really been busy working on old projects! And you can probably call it an old project if it were in the cupboard for 5 years. Well, my daughters quilt is together, I still need to sew the outside border. It consists of 4.5 inch squares which needs triangles on the 2 outer corners.
While I didn't have the time to cut the squares to use for that border, I pulled my Kaleidoscope from underneath my quilt frame and restarted that. No picture...sorry...maybe tomorrow! 3 rows went together today, so I might just get the centre done over the weekend! The centre consists of 7 rows. Then I need some fill in diamonds to make the quilt square and then I can add borders. It is just strange how tiring it was to sew those 3 rows. But I fell into a very bad habit.... taking afternoon naps on the couch... and I missed out today!

This picture is my charm quilt that I started many moons ago... I dare to say at least 6 years ago. All I need is 13 more triangles in cream(3 different creams to a triangle) and then I can put it all together. My aim is to have the 13 triangles done before we go on holiday end April, so I can work on it as we drive. Well, if I will accomplish my goal,we'll see!

Roadtrip

Today I went on a little trip: I was asked to be a vendor at a quilt group in the Overberg area. So, I packed up my car yesterday, got the last afterthoughts together this morning and left bright and early. A little drizzle as I left home, but it cleared quickly, though the clouds stayed all the way. As I got closer to the Sir Lowry Pass, there was a huge police presence: apparently there was riots and clashes with the police near Grabouw, so we had to take a detour around Hangklip and Bettysbay. The scenery was just beautiful, because the road was quite congested, so I had a chance to snap a picture with my cellphone!

I had a lovely morning with the Overberg Quilters, got home in time to unpack my car and collect the kids from school.

This morning I had to demo a technique and I chose the 10 minute quilt block from Suzanne McNeal. I made a quilt last year using this technique and I chose the jelly roll version. it is so easy, and everybody came back for a second look. I'm sure some of them will try it out. I referred them to her video on You Tube to go and check out for themselves and get a refresher if they want to try it!

Package arrrived

My package from Jeanneke arrived!! Thank you very much, the squares are lovely!!

Today was such a lovely day. First my husband and I went to Malmesbury to fetch our new passports, we had coffee and freshly baked bread along the way. When I came home I had a chance to cut some of the sashings for Lindie's quilt and then a few customers came around. Sometimes it feels like friends came over for a visit - some customers become friends! Then I became mom's taxi, chauffeuring kids to sports practices and fetching a few items for supper at the grocery store.

Now I am flat on my back, on the couch, surfing my favourite and hopefully some new blogs too!!

Cape Argus Cycle Tour

Today my hubby and I took part in the biggest cycling event in our country : 110 km in a circle route around the Cape Peninsula. Almost no wind and a temperature of 32 deg Celsius! A perfect day!! it took us 5 and a half hours to complete and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute! I know a lot of people does it much quicker, but that's my best and I am happy and my husband is very proud of me: and that is all that counts!!

This is one of my longtime UFO's I pulled out of the cupboard and started working on again. It is a quilt I started at least 3 to 4 years ago for my eldest daughter (Lindie). She turned 18 two weeks ago and thought I could maybe get this quilt done for her this year.... only one more block to do, then sashings and a border..... maybe tomorrow I could get the last block done if my shop is not too busy...

My hubby is totally hooked on a series called Boston Legal and he likes it if I watch TV with him, so I am crocheting my woolen carpet. It is coming on nicely, I am halfway almost! Thoroughly enjoying it!

Found the idea on the blog of Lucy from the North of England : http://attic24.typepad.com/weblog/ Check it out... she has a beautiful blog! Anyway, may your Monday be truly blessed!

Thrift shopping

This morning my mom and I went to a rummage sale at an retirement village close by. It started early: 7 o' clock, and I completely forgot! I was busy gearing up to go cycling with my husband and his group of friends went the phone rang. It was my mom asking if I was still going to the sale,as it was only 06h30 and the cars were queueing all ready! I asked my husband if we could postpone the cycling by an hour as I REALLY would love to go...he reluctantly said yes and after raiding HIS wallet I quickly went down to the retirement home!(Only a 3km drive)

It is a German place and we found some real treasures! I love the http://dutchsister-s.blogspot.com/ and regularly see what Corry and Heleen are up to and on the 29th of Feb Corry post about the beautiful crochet work of http://gipsybazar.blogspot.com/....and I was fascinated by the vibrancy of the colours. I actually don't crochet, but my mom does, and I thought I would like to ask my mom if she could make it... I asked her and she said it is very easy she will show me how! And look at the beautiful colours I got this morning!

I also bought some 100% pure wool used for rug hooking....but since I definitely don't rug hook... I am now crocheting a rug! I first tried my hand at knitting a rug and then my mom said I could also crochet one. I tried that out too and I liked the result much more than the knitted version, so now I am crocheting too! (I never thought that day would come!) One ball of wool is almost finished! SO is my skin on my forefinger - only one sheen of wool a day or my skin will come off.

My mom bought these beautiful laces: it was made up in a bag, and as she picked it up another lady almost grabbed it from her hands! She paid R15 ($2) for the bag. What a bargain! I also got some wool for tapestry work, which I have no idea what to do with. But is is still good old German made wool! I love it! We had so much fun in half an hour and I only spend $20! I bough a little chair as well decorated with traditional German paintwork called bauernmalerei. I one leg is broken, so I am considering chopping all the legs off and making a wall hanging out of it!

Here all my treasures are laid out:
(one can hardly see the beautiful hankies in the left corner... sorry, the lighting is poor!)

I was back home in 45 minutes and then we went cycling by ourselves: 45 km. Now my hubby is taking a afternoon nap and I should too, as we have a 40th birthday party tonight!

Thursday, March 1, 2012

I finally had a moment to work on my Blogger Block of the month designed by http://www.diaryofaquilter.com/2012/02/star-quilt-block-tutorial.html.
I'm happy with the results and enjoy the quick block a month but still accomplishing something! Slowly but surely the project is getting shape!! Now we just wait for the 25th of March!! I surely won't be sewing that day: it is my husband's birthday!!

I also managed to finish my One Project a Month last night - just made it for Feb!!Luckily for me February had an extra day!!
